Mending a Broken Heart

Working with animals is a lot of things.  It's rewarding, exhausting, joyful, entertaining...and, yes, it is often heartbreaking.  You ache inside when someone tells you they are looking for a new home for their dog.  You feel inexplicably like crying when a new "Missing Pet" post pops up on Facebook.  It is true that there are many happy endings to balance out all that heartbreak - but it doesn't make it any less difficult.

Tonight my heart breaks for the animals that are outdoors in these below-zero temperatures.  Whether they are chained up or on the run, cared for or neglected, they deserve better.  I wish I could do more for them.  Thinking about it for too long is too much for me to stand; if you've got any uplifting videos that help you put a Band-Aid over the hurt, send them my way.

Here are my personal favorites.  I hope they lift your spirits like they do mine.  (They're all under 2 minutes and well worth a watch...or ten!)

  1. Hi Y'all!

I want to know, why do you have a dog if you only see it long enough to give it water and food?

Lots of folks I know have hounds, several, and they live outdoors in runs with a doghouse. They do use them to hunt. But it seems such a sad life.

Most retrievers are lucky, like me, and 'cause we work closely with our human and you don't need a large "pack", but just one good dog, we live in the home with our human. Lots of folks have several of us, 'cause they love us, but you really only need one retriever at a time. Those I know all live indoors.

    Y'all come on by,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

    1. I agree, Hawk - it can't be comfortable to sleep in the cold outdoors! :( You are very lucky to have a nice warm home to live in!

  2. OMD, hilarious videos! These definitely made my day, thanks for sharing. I agree, it's so hard when you see all the neglect and pain in the animal world. All we can do is educate people to be good stewards of their animals and give what we can to help; time, money, & our voices. The culture is changing, but slowly. Happy & Healthy New Year to you & your loved ones!

  4. I can completely understand how you feel. It is heartbreaking to see all the harm people can do to dogs. Here's a video of me wrestling with my rescued (foster failure) Monkey! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTFtKtkzwQw

  7. Being a compassionate person is definitely a double edged sword. The same sensitivity that makes you capable of loving so deeply also makes you sensitive to every pain that comes to others. Never stop loving. Happy New Year!
