Cyber Sunday: Links I Love

We have really been having an awesome few weeks!  After purchasing our first home, Jared and I have been having fun making plans for each room.  My job as a library director is incredibly fulfilling, and my little pet sitting side business is picking up like crazy!  (You can like my Facebook page here - I share lots of cute dog photos!  :)  Jen DeHaan of Dogthusiast designed my cover photo, isn't she awesome?!)

Kol's Notes always has delicious-looking recipes for your pup, and this cheese ice cream recipe is no exception!  Looks pretty simple too, and such a great idea for the summer months.

I LOVE this blog, and this post brought me to tears.  Jake has had a bit of a rough time adjusting after the death of his big brother Melvin, but this post is all about why his mama will never give up on him <3

It's always nice to read posts about shelter animals that are uplifting rather than depressing.  Talent Hounds recently shared this wonderful roundup of shelter dogs who make a difference.  Click on over and smile!

This craft kit for kids is a very cute take on paper dolls - paper dogs and clothes to dress them up in!  I have a feeling my niece would love this :)

This dog bed is not in my budget, but I am so in love!  It's covered in words - one of my favorite quotes from the Velveteen Rabbit:  "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily or have sharp edges or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."   Beautiful!  Jared is loving this baseball mitt dog bed from the Martha Stewart line at PetSmart.  I have to agree - it's pretty darn adorable!  We saw it in the store today but can't find it on the site. :(

Buzzfeed posted an awesome roundup of books about animals...they missed my personal favorite (Cowboy & Wills by Monica Holloway), but there's TONS of great reads on the list.

HeARTs Speak is an organization of artists doing good for shelter animals; they just put out a guide to photographing shelter dogs that looks super helpful!  I'm not very good at photography, but it's definitely something I would like to work on - I'd love to photograph adoptable pets!

Is this hilarious or what?!  Dogster recently featured the work of illustrator Josh Lynch; my personal favorite was this Pug/Spiderman!  So funny :)

Cyber Sunday: Best of January

Buzzfeed posted an adorable round-up of photos featuring the stars of Puppy Bowl!  Each pic gives a reason why you should adopt a pet.  I can't wait to watch these cuties in action...because let's face it, that's the only part of Superbowl Sunday I really take part in :)  

Also on Buzzfeed, a great and extensive list of 89 movies to watch with your kids - now, granted, my husband and I don't have children...but we love movies!  We've definitely added some more flicks to our Netflix queue after glancing at this.  (This isn't necessarily pet-related, but many of the movies do involve animals!)

 

Raising the Ruf, a photography blog featuring a Pharaoh Hound, has a hilarious series called Adventures While Sleeping.  The photographer creates scenes around her sleeping pup, and the results are pretty darn amazing!  This one was my favorite; it's called "Hold Your Horses". :D

BlogPaws never fails to inspire, and this list of blogging prompts is no exception.  But the article that I was most impressed with was called "We Live for Adoption and Rescue,"and it refers to the controversial Superbowl commercial everyone's talking about.  We should be proud of ourselves for speaking up for animals everywhere - look at what we, as animal lovers, can accomplish!

Beth at Daily Dog Tag recently posted a fun gift guide for Valentine's Day pet lovers.  I'm pretty sure I NEED that Jax & Bones heart rope toy for Riley!

 

Holy cow, you guys.  I knew PrideBites custom products were amazing, but I had no idea they'd be this amazing!  Does that look just like the photo, or what?!  I was so excited to finally get this in the mail; it was like Christmas all over again!  I don't think I'll let Riley play with this one too much, though - I know all too well his toy-destroying tendencies...we'll put it up on a shelf somewhere :)

BlogPaws featured an amazing article about self-esteem and blogging.  SUPER inspiring stuff!

There's not many things happier than a shelter dog finding a new forever home, and Buzzfeed shared a Thanksgiving roundup of thankful adopted shelter pets.

I teared up when reading the birthday post devoted to Sherman on My Brown Newfies.  The post is called "What Sherman Is," and it's very heartfelt and sweet - click on over to read it!

Kol's Notes never fails to inspire when it comes to DIY, and these ornaments are no exception!  Follow the steps to make your own right over here!

I'm sure you've all noticed the abundance of gift guides out there this time of year.  While they are all great, my fave so far has been this one from Beagles & Bargains.  TONS of great stuff for both pet lovers and the pets they love...I bought 3 things from this list, I loved it so much! :)

I need this cute print from the Etsy shop Botamaki.  It is titled "Give Me Shelter" and features adorable breeds with cute descriptions, and it's only 4.95!  

This WatercolorBook print (also from Etsy) is catching my eye as well.  She has tons of amazing pet watercolors, but the Chihuahua might be my favorite.  Even though I don't own one...Chuy's Mom and Bailey's Mom, whaddaya think?  Does this remind you of your furbabies??

I only recently figured out that it's Dogthusiast's Jen that runs Stylish Canine - silly me! - and I have been obsessed with the shop for a while now!  This adorable Christmas-sweater-themed collar is currently on my to-buy list...I love how red looks against Riley's white fur :)

Also just added the blog Decor and the Dog to my daily reading list...it's chock full of gorgeous photos and fun DIYs!  I would definitely recommend you check it out!

Cyber Saturday: Halloween Edition

Rounding up my favorite fall- and Halloween-themed links from around the Web this week...

Beagles and Bargains posted an adorable (and super-easy!) recipe for frozen "candy corn" treats for your dog.    It involves pumpkins and yogurt, and it couldn't be cuter!

Speaking of cute recipes, have you seen these little mummy treats over on Kol's Notes?!  Perfect for Halloween!

Puppy Leaks recently posted an informative list of ways to keep your pup safe on Halloween.  We all need to keep in mind how stressful the holiday can be for pets - what with the doorbell ringing and kids running around in scary costumes and all.  Not to mention all the dangerous candy they might ingest!  Click on over and check it out to prepare for the 31st.

Robbi at BlogPaws had some great ideas for using Halloween as inspiration for your pet blog.  Writer's block can be tough - especially now, when the weather is getting chilly and we're all cooped up inside.  Holidays like this one, though, can serve as a great starting point for posts:  costumes, treats, and safety tips are all Halloween-related and could make awesome posts!

I adore this treat jar from Bliss Home & Design!  We keep Riley's treats shut away in a closet - in their original packaging - but this jar would allow me to keep them out in the open in a pretty way.  Fishs Eddy also has some amazing pet-related home decor.

Any fellow pet bloggers live near the Twin Cities?  Be sure to check out Sever's Corn Maze and Fall Festival!  It's a huge corn maze, pumpkin patch, and farmer's market and looks like tons of fun.  Bonus:  it's not a haunted event, so it is very kid-friendly!

Cyber Saturday: The Best of September

I have been slacking on the Cyber Saturday posts lately, so I figured I would update you with my favorite links from last month!  This post is gonna be light on photos and heavy on links... Here we go!

Lola the Pitty did a great round-up of Gifts for Those Who Have Lost a Dog.  Even if you don't know anyone who has had an animal pass, check this post out anyway!  There's a few things on there - specifically the pawprint ornaments and mosaic stepping stone - that I'd love to buy (or make!) for myself.

I loved Irresistible Pet's Fall Bucket List, and it's even printable!  Click the link so you can print one for yourself and check off each activity one by one before fall inevitably kicks the bucket (which, by the way, is probably going to happen sooner than we'd all like - I heard the dreaded "S" word for this weekend in Iowa!).  My favorite fall activity to do with Riley is taking a 'fall foliage' walk!

BlogPaws posted an incredibly helpful list of ways to save up for the upcoming conference in May.  This year, it's located in Nashville - that's quite the drive for us Iowans!  While I absolutely cannot wait to attend my very first BlogPaws conference, I'm not looking forward to spending so much money (on hotels, gas, food, etc.)...and neither is my husband.  But this handy guide listed all sorts of ways for us to help save!

I have really been enjoying BarkPost lately!  I am in love with every single dog breed poster they pictured, and speaking of love...have you seen this video yet?!  Your heart might just explode from all the cuteness!  Last month, they also put up a post called "If Dogs Were Contractors", featuring dog-friendly home decor and design ideas.  My favorite was the handy cabinet nook for your pooch to nap in, shown below.

Over at Oh My Dog Blog, Maggie's husband spoke out recently about what it's like being married to a pet blogger.  Equal parts funny (helping set up Mardi Gras photoshoots, talking about poop consistency) and sweet (he loves supporting "Maggie being Maggie"), this was such an adorable idea for a post!

This isn't pet-related, but if you're a nerd like me and my husband, BuzzFeed posted some pretty awesome ideas for hosting a Harry Potter Halloween party!

Kol's Notes:  I don't normally go back through a blog's archives and bookmark ideas (unless I REALLY love the blog), but I did just this with Kol's Notes.  It's about dogs and DIY - two of my favorite things ever!  It doesn't hurt that the writing is hilarious, either.

Puppy Leaks:  Though this blog hasn't been around for very long, it has quickly become one of my favorites.  The posts cover a huge variety of topics:  personal notes about the author's own dog, helpful tips about illnesses, important news stories about shelter dogs, and the list goes on.  I think the post that first brought me there was "Ways to Help Shelter Animals Without Adopting", while my favorite post so far is probably "Effective Animal Networking".  Lots of subjects very close to my heart.

Cyber Saturday

This week, BlogPaws put up two great and very helpful posts:  the first was another list of blog prompts - great ideas to get you inspired for the whole month of July!  My personal favorite?  Describe your house from your pet's perspective - so fun!  The second was called "Five Ways Your Pet Blog Can Soar".  Very motivating, as usual!

BarkPost featured a great little list of stores that are pet-friendly, featuring the always adorable Instagram pups, Henry and Penny.  Some of the stores were surprising - for example, did you know Bed Bath & Beyond allows dogs?  I sure didn't!!

I LOVE the Monday Miracles feature on Dogster, and this week's superstar was Nubbles!  Nubbles is a chihuahua born with only two legs; he sometimes uses a wheelchair, but he often just hops around on his back legs!  I just love him; Nubbles seems to live a normal life despite the missing limbs - what an inspiration!

Dogster also posted an article all about how to combat seasonal allergies.  Riley has environmental allergies, and his paws are constantly pink due to all his licking and nibbling.  I always feel so bad for the poor guy, so these tips were much appreciated!

Dog Milk is one of my favorite sites, and this week, they introduced me to Jesse Freidin, a doggie photographer who has turned his camera on something new...shelter volunteers!  His photos strive to show off the special relationship between volunteers and shelter animals.  Being a volunteer myself, I absolutely love this - and I'm pretty sure I need that "Rescue is the new black" tee! :)

This week was a blur of errand-running - and, if I'm honest, peanut butter M&M-eating (I'm addicted!).  Jared and I went on a couple of shopping trips to find some scrubs to wear to my new job.  One of the perks of working in an animal hospital is all the cute dog-and-cat scrubs you get to wear!  We've got a wedding to get up for in the morning, so I'll keep today's Cyber Saturday brief.

I found this hilarious website, "Written? Kitten!", which "rewards" you with a new photo of a cute kitten, puppy, or bunny after you've written 100 words.  If you're an animal lover who also writes, this could be quite the motivational tool! ;)

I've been wanting to whip up some frozen treats to cool Riley off during these hot summer days, and Owned by a Husky just posted a recipe that sounds awesome and easy.  Looks delish, and her huskies sure seemed to love 'em! 

DogMilk posted about these stylish leashes from RuggedWrist.  They make not only leashes and collars for your pooch, but matching bracelets for you, too!  I love the nautical-inspired look - I never thought that accessorizing to match your dog could be so fashionable!

Buzzfeed featured a black cat by the name of Shelby, who ran away from home 13 years ago.  Her family opened the door one night to find a cat on their doorstep...sure enough, it was Shelby, mysteriously home once again.  Pretty amazing!!!

The Bark Post posted a list of "17 Adorably Derpressed Dogs", and this gloomy guy was #13!  The caption reads, "Such melancholy.  Very gloom."  Hilarious!  Also featured was a video of dogs reacting to humans barking at them - super cute.  We tried it with Riley after watching the video, and he just tried to give us kisses. :)

This week, HelloGiggles posted an article about "crazy cat ladies" and the stigma attached to that phrase.  It is NOT shameful to be a crazy cat lady, and if my husband's lungs didn't suck (just kidding, Jared.  Kinda.), I would happily join that club, too.  Let's be proud to be crazy cat ladies!

The popular design blog Almost Makes Perfect posted about how to make a simple DIY elevated pet bowl stand.  It's cute, easily customizable, and it provides a resolution to your cat/dog making a mess with his water bowl.  An elevated stand like this one could also benefit pets who have issues with regurgitation (megaesophagus).

Blogging Wizard wrote an amazingly helpful article about how to make every blog post have more of an impact on readers.  Awesome tips for standout headlines, ways to draw readers and subscribers, and how to make contacts in the blogosphere.  Super important stuff that all bloggers should be aware of!

I just discovered the wonderful blog of a Maryland veterinarian, Diary of a Real-Life Veterinarian.  After reading an article about how to get hired in an animal hospital (where I'm hoping to eventually work), I was hooked - I read through the archives, loving every post...some of which brought me to tears!  That's why this post is from 2012...but the subject matter hasn't gotten any less important over time.  It's all about pet obesity, why it happens, and how to deal with it.  Every pet owner and animal lover should read this.

I am loving this throw pillow from SocietySocial, called the "It's a Doggy World."  I love that the silhouettes of many different breeds are shown - it's a very quirky and cute pillow that I'm pretty sure I need in my home.  But since it's $42 on sale, I was forced to search for some cheaper options:  I found this adorable "Dog Rules" pillow for $14.99, this OMG SO CUTE doggie-shaped pillow that can be ordered in Chihuahua, Shiba Inu, Corgi, and many different other breeds for around $30, and this "It's been a LONG day" dachshund pillow for only $17.99.  All are equally as cute as the above pillow. :)

And finally, Kelley's Dog Blog gave me an awesome idea for cooling Riley down on the hottest summer days - it just involves toys, a wading pool, and a whole lotta ice!

Dogster posted a great article all about keeping your pet safe during a tornado.  Tornadoes can - and do - occur in every state, and the Midwest (where we live) is especially vulnerable.  These 8 tips are extremely useful during this time of year.

June is Adopt-A-Cat Month, and I am celebrating it all month here on the blog - and so is BlogPaws!  This week, they gave a list of reasons you should adopt a cat...the number one reason?  You'll save a shelter cat's life, which is a reward in and of itself!  They also posted a wonderful article called "Why Should I Give a Damn About Your Blog?"  Sounds a bit harsh, right?  That's what I thought at first glance, too - but it's actually quite a motivational post about getting people to come to your blog and tips on how to do it.  Good stuff!

This little cutie's name is Harley, and he's a 13-year-old puppy mill survivor.  He was rescued a few years ago, and as he continues to heal, he serves as a spokesdog for puppy mill survivors everywhere!  As you can see, he's in some rough shape...but he never lets it hold him back!  Harley is one of the possible "cover dogs" for Modern Dog Magazine's photo contest.  I think it would be incredible to have a puppy mill survivor with special needs as a cover model!  If you think so too, join me and vote for Harley!! 

Always With Yoo shared a set of awesome infographics about how kids should and shouldn't interact with dogs.  Very helpful - more kids should know this!

HelloGiggles posted a cute little article called "6 Reasons Why I Really Respect My Dog."  Funny and inspiring.

I loved BarkPost's instructions on making this cool graphic artwork!  Super easy, and when you're done, you have a colorful, customized silhouette of your pup!

Hope you are having a lovely long weekend so far!  Before I get started with this week's link round-up, I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words on my receiving the Liebster Award - it basically made my week! :)

I love, love, LOVE Sophie Gamand's photo series of wet dogs!  To capture these comical photos, she hung out with a groomer and snapped each dog right after their bath.  Each picture is equally adorable - I would totally hang these on my wall!

Dogster posted a sobering essay about what it's really like to work for a pet store.  It was a very difficult piece for me to get through, but I think it's important that people read it.  I would never buy a puppy from a pet store, especially after reading this!

I love to shop at the amazing online store called Fab, and this week, I stumbled across this diagram of dog breeds on the site.  Every (purebred) breed is included on this poster.  I'm pretty sure I need this, though I think they need to make a poster dedicated solely to mutts, too :)

BlogPaws posted a great little article this week about how to write engaging content and drive more readers to your blog.  The tips are SO helpful, meant to keep pet bloggers from posting boring content.  I keep going back to refer to it as I'm writing - definitely check it out!

I am in love with this adorable polka-dot life jacket for dogs from PetCo.  Riley will be accompanying my husband and I up to Minnesota next week, where we rented a pet-friendly cabin that comes with boat rentals.  Have any readers used a doggie life jacket before??  All this pink might make Riley feel a bit...effeminate...but eh, he'll be okay - he's pretty secure with his masculinity :)  (Some other great life-jacket options can be purchased here, including an ADORABLE nautical print!!)

I stumbled across this article about an Ohio man who operates a service called Rescue Road Trips, which transports shelter dogs from high-kill shelters in the South to Northerners wanting a new pet.  He goes on the road trips every other week (!!!), picking up around 80 dogs with each trip.  He even sleeps in the back of the vehicle with the dogs so they don't get scared!  This is just awesome.

Buzzfeed posted a list of the 17 best places to visit if you love animals.  This picture shows an island in Japan that is absolutely covered with bunnies!  That would be so neat to see!  I was, however, disappointed to see that Utah's Best Friends Animal Sanctuary wasn't on the list - my husband and I are planning on visiting them next year, and I hear it's pretty amazing.

Cyber Saturday

They say a watched pot never boils; it can also be said that a watched cell phone never rings.  This week absolutely slithered by for me, mostly because I was waiting excitedly for several phone calls/emails that never came.  I clutched my phone to my side throughout the entire week - I seriously felt like I was back in the tenth grade and waiting for my crush to call and ask me to the winter formal.  It was ridiculous.  I am so very glad the week is over.  And after a particularly rough day, I am always grateful that I have a pet - Riley always knows when I am down, leaving his "daddy's" side to come lay with me.  What a sweetheart.  :)  Here's the links from around the web that I found interesting this week!

People don't think of overfeeding their dog as a form of abuse...but take a look at the photo above, and you might change your mind!  Poor Obie is a dachshund who, due to previous owners, ballooned up to 71 pounds!  Thanks to a dedicated foster family, he is now down to a comparatively svelte 30.  Great job, Obie - you look amazing!!

Generally, we tend to think of service dogs as assisting the blind.  However, service dogs are becoming more and more typical lately, for a huge variety of disabilities:  epilepsy, autism, and issues with mental/emotional health.  This amazing post is about one woman's service dog and how much he has helped her cope with everyday life.  Definitely inspiring!

I stumbled across this blog last week and was struck by this post in particular.  It's all about how one pit bull terrier at a shelter helped this woman's son, who has autism.  Thanks to this dog, her son is more able to communicate with others and make sense of emotional cues in conversation; he loves being around the dog because he doesn't feel judged - he can be himself.  The way dogs can help improve the symptoms of autism really amazes me - I can't wait to learn more about it through this blog!

This sweet face is that of Lil' Bub, who was born a "perma-kitten" and a dwarf.  She has no teeth, some extra toes, and is so cute I can't even stand it.  Check out more photos of her on her Facebook page!

Lisa's dad has Alzheimer's, and he is not able to communicate with her anymore.  This video shows how he responds to her dog.  (Warning:  You will need a tissue.  Or seven.)

Cyber Saturday on Easter Sunday!

This remote-control sized MinPin is Walter, and his deformities are the result of inbreeding.  After spending a year locked in a cage by heartless owners, Walter was rescued.  His story has a happy ending, as he now lives in a loving, caring home!  Click the link for more adorable photos!

Pitbull lovers, rejoice!  The inaugural One Million Pibble March on Washington is coming up on May 3rd; this event is meant to spread awareness of the goodness of the breed.  Pittie lovers will assemble on the the lawn of the US Capitol, fighting for the end of breed-specific laws as well as stronger laws against dogfighting.  It is a human-only event that will hopefully help us to make great strides in the fight against breed discrimination!

I want these soooo bad!  Vans has collaborated with the ASPCA, designing these awesome cat-print sneakers and their high-topped canine companions, to raise money for the prevention of animal cruelty.  i need them!!!  (Buy the super-cute toddler version here!)

Lola the Pitty, one of my favorite doggy-bloggers, put up a recent post about Dog Fighting Awareness Day.  This post lists some tips on how you can help prevent it, and it provides some really useful info...definitely check this one out!

These custom crayon carvings are created by an artist in California, who uses plain ol' crayons to make a perfect replica of your dog!  Cutest thing ever, with so much amazing detail!

Don't click on this link if you are prone to crying big, ugly tears (as I did) while watching sad animal videos.  This is Miley, who was found in terrible condition in the middle of a trash heap.  After being saved by a rescue, taking care of this adorable black chihuahua, and generally winning the world's collective heart, Miley has found herself a forever home!

Same goes for this tearjerker of a video:  This dog waited for eight days outside a hospital in Brazil, where his owner was undergoing surgery.  The video is of the two being reunited, and it turned me into a sobbing mess.

This is the cover photo for Heath's Haven, a rescue dedicated entirely to special-needs dogs.  They find and take in dogs with neurological illness and paralysis, among other issues, saving them from being euthanized and get started on their rehabilitation and recovery.  Eventually, they set the dog up with a wheelchair and help them to find a forever home!  This is an absolutely amazing organization that gives dogs second chances that they wouldn't have otherwise been given; I encourage you to check out their website - there's some really inspiring stories there!  Thanks to Sharon of the amazing blog Lessons from a Paralyzed Dog for posting about Heath's Haven.

Have you heard about the new awards program for dogs and cats called Best in Shelter?!  It is an upcoming television prime-time special focusing on shelter pets - kind of like the Westminster for homeless animals!  This is a concept that is pretty groundbreaking; shelters across the country are ridiculously full, and hopefully something like this will help people take more notice of shelter animals.  They will also not only be showcasing adorable kittens and puppies, but "tripawds" and special-needs animals as well!  The when and where of this program has not yet been announced, so stay tuned!

The Black Dogs Project is a photo series intended to show off the beauty in the often-ignored black dog.  Black dogs are some of the least-adopted in shelters, for whatever reason, and this photographer wants to show the world that they shouldn't be passed by!  Thanks to Melissa of Bubby and Bean for alerting me to this project's existence.
